For most people, fragrances are a part of our daily routine. We can all agree that scents are a powerful element of one’s personality. Scents actually hold a lot of memories, and it is easier to remember a person by their scent. Personally, I love compliments concerning how good my scent is. I put in the effort to learn about the types of fragrances and how you can pair them up to create a personalized scent. It is an easy process; knowing what scents you like is all it takes.
They are a variety of fragrances in the market, and each has its unique notes that belong to different fragrance families. There are 4-fragrance families; Floral, Oriental, Woody, and Fresh.
In this article, I will share the ins of each category and give examples of common fragrances from each.
- Floral scent
This is the most common feminine fragrance family. The scents vary from the smell of fresh-cut flowers or powdery notes. These fragrances are perfect for Summer and Springtime.
Its sub-categories include.
* Floral- Primary focus is the floral notes, Rose, Jasmin, and Lily. They smell like fresh cuts of flowers.
* Soft Floral- Consist of soft, powdery, sweet, and creamy notes common from the Orris.
* Floral Oriental- It contains floral notes with a mix of spices like the Orange Blossom.
Examples of common Floral fragrances. Lancome- Idole Eau de Parfum, Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet Eau de Toilette, Gucci Bloom Eau de Parfum.
2. Oriental Scent
It consists of exotic notes, herbs, and spices with resin notes that bring out the warm and sensual notes- perfect for Winter. These common notes include Vanilla, Cinnamon, Orchid, Orris, and Orange flower.
They offer rich, sultry, and enticing scents. Oriental is often luxurious and seductive.
* Soft Oriental- Soft, floral notes with a mix of incense and warm spices such as amber, cinnamon, and clove. Resulting in a sweet and opulent distinctive scent.
* Oriental- Consist of warmer and sweeter notes of vanilla, musk, caramel, and almonds. The blend results in a warm sensual feel.
*Woody Oriental- this is a combination of earthy tones like Patchouli and Sandalwood with spices and sweet notes.
Examples of common Oriental fragrances. YSL- Black Opium Intense Eau de Parfum, Lancome-La Nuit Eau de Parfum, Givenchy- L’interdit Eau de Parfum.
3. Fresh Scent
This family consists of bright clean fragrances. They are normally citrusy, herby with oceanic scents, and are best worn during the Spring Season.
They are normally mixed with spicy notes to enhance their longevity.
* Citrus- Contain zesty and tangy notes like Mandarin and Bergamot. The primary focus is the citrusy notes.
* Green- This scent is normally that of a freshly mowed lawn or crushed green leaves.
*Aromatic- Contains notes of sophisticated, clean, and fresh blends of warm woody scents.
*Fruity- Focuses on sweet gourmand notes of tropical fruits.
Common Fresh fragrances include. Dolce&Gabana Light Blue Eau de Toilette, Maison Margelia Replica Lazy Sunday Morning, Creed Aventus Cologne
4. Woody Scent
This family contains blends of warm, opulent fragrance blends. Common notes include Sandalwood, Oud, Cedarwood, Patchouli, and Vetiver.
Woody scents are made for the Autumn season.
This family consists of woody, mousy woods, dry woods, and aromatic wood scents, that result in a variety of silky, creamy, and smoky wood notes.
As I had mentioned above they are combined with fresh notes to increase the longevity of the fresh fragrances.
Examples of Woody fragrances include. Tom Ford Oud wood Eau de Parfum, Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540, Dolce&Gabana the Only One, Eau de Parfum.
Depending on which fragrance family you incline more towards, they are a vast selection to choose from. You can also pair fragrances together, be keen to ensure that they work to match your preferences. There is no judgment when it comes to which fragrance you use as long it resonates with who you are as an individual.
