We all have heard the term SUSTAINABLE FASHION quite a lot in recent years. Some of us are aware of what sustainable fashion is, while some don’t know a thing about it. So, this blog is for the ones who don’t know or know bits of SUSTAINABLE FASHION.

Before going upon sustainable fashion first, let me tell you about what sustainability is. It is about maintaining life on earth and the ecosystems required to support it. Sustainability is the avoidance of the depletion of natural resources to maintain an ecological balance. So, sustainable fashion refers to clothing designed, manufactured, and distributed in a way that does not harm the environment. It can also mean clothing, shoes, and accessories manufactured, marketed, and used in the most sustainable manner possible, taking environmental and socio-economic aspects. In practice, this implies continuous work to improve all stages of the product life cycle, from design, raw material production, manufacturing, transport, storage, marketing, and final sale, to use, reuse, repair, remake, and recycling of the product and its components.

From an environmental perspective, the aim should be to minimize any undesirable waste-producing from the product. (a) ensuring efficient and careful use of natural resources (water, energy, land, soil, animals, plants, biodiversity, ecosystems); (b) selecting renewable energy sources (wind, solar) at every stage and, (c) maximizing repair, remake, reuse, and recycling or up-cycling of the product. From a socioeconomic perspective, all stakeholders should improve present working conditions for workers on the field, in the factories, transportation chain, and in stores, by aligning with good ethics, best practices, and international codes of conduct. Maintaining transparency for the consumer, if we do not know what is happening, how can we question?

This was all about sustainable fashion. Now, the question is how as a consumer we can contribute towards sustainability. here you go with the answer –

( 1 ) By being aware of sustainable fashion and creating awareness.

( 2 ) Investing in a brand or any product which are sustainable after researching it. Some brands claim to be sustainable but are not, so research before buying.

( 3 ) Accepting slow fashion, using your old clothes styling into something new, rather than throwing them away or, you can contact several brands or a person who is up-cycling using waste or old clothes.

( 4 ) There are so many movements about sustainability. Try to keep yourself updated about them and, you can also volunteer for them.

Accepting conscious fashion can change a lot of things. We have to be aware of our purchase and how it is making a difference.
