MODERN DANCE FASHION

Dance fashion has had so many faces in the last decade. However, to study dance fashion, we have to study dance. Modern Dance, also referred to as theatrical dance, began as a protest. This protest was against the rigid nature of ballet and interpretive dance in the 19th Century. This movement started in the United States and Europe, attaining widespread success in the 20th Century. Thus Modern Dance came to be.

It had been said that the ballet and interpretive dance were rigid and emotionless, but dance is believed to emanate from the solar plexus, i.e the core.

DANCE FASHION

The solar plexus is the embodiment of the sympathetic system, hence it is believed that dance is emotional. With the development of Modern Dance, a new wardrobe came along with just as the dance form believed in freedom of expression, the wardrobe seconds. Modern Dance Fashion is a free-bound wardrobe choice.

COMPONENTS OF MODERN DANCE FASHION

DANCE FASHION 1

The highlight of modern dance is freedom.

This is reflected in wardrobe choices. Itchy tights and stiff tutus were traded for short shorts. Leotards traded for bralettes. Huge tutus exited the stage for flowing sundresses, dress shirts for bare chests and so much more

Here is a list of items every modern dance artist wears today:

  •  Wrap skirt
  • Short Shorts
  • Tanktop
  • Flowing dresses
  • Leg warmers
  • bralette
  • Leggings/Yoga Pants
  • Free fitting formal pants
  • Dress shirts
  • Sweatpants
  • And a handful of other gym wear

It is beautiful to watch evolution unfold, and we will keep watching the history of dance fashion unfold. Please do leave a comment, I would love to know what you think and what you would like to know about dance fashion.
