Dealing with acne can be hard if you don’t know whether the ingredients in the products that you use are good for your acne or will they cause even more breakouts?

So here is a list of potential ingredients that you should stay away from if you struggle with acne.

INGREDIENTS YOU SHOULD AVOID IF YOU HAVE ACNE!!

Essential oils

Essential oils including tea tree oil, frankincense, geranium oil, and those derived from citrus fruits are popular and recommended by everyone. However, some of these oils can also worsen conditions such as rosacea, irritate the skin, and increase skin sensitivity to sunlight, making skin more prone to burn.

Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter’s molecules are packed very tight together, which makes it very comedogenic (pore-clogging). So use caution before applying cocoa butter to your face. If you’re prone to acne and breakouts, you may not want to use any products that list cocoa butter!

Coconut oil

Coconut oil is considered comedogenic and can clog pores and cause pimples and/or acne. Using coconut oil on the skin is not recommended for most acne-prone skin. When looking for a moisturizer for acne-prone skin, look for lotions that are labeled “non-comedogenic” or oil-free.

Ethanol

In the long run, products with ethanol can enlarge pores and increase greasiness, so avoid products containing any type of alcohol if you have an oily skin type or acne-prone skin.

Ethanol in toners can also be quite drying for sensitive skin types, so watch out for that, too.

Sodium Chloride

Although you may not believe it, salt is occasionally used as a thickening ingredient in cosmetics. Acne-prone skin, on the other hand, reacts promptly to Sodium Chloride because it produces outbreaks. It can cause breakouts around the mouth and chin area and is typically found in foundations.

Algae extract

This could be listed as plankton extract or carrageenan in the ingredient list, and while it may help to balance sebum production and act as an anti-inflammatory, it can also be comedogenic, causing whiteheads and blackheads. Excessive use of algae extract can clog the pores, causing acne and pimples to form.

The next time you buy skincare or makeup, look out for these ingredients!
