When you used to wear oversized clothing, your mother would make sure you could get through puberty wearing the same school jacket rather than doing it as a fashion statement.
But if you received your diploma within the last 15 years, it’s likely that you grew up wearing clothes that were slimming and flattering and didn’t just hang on your shoulders. The majority of the 20th and 21st centuries have seen slim cuts rule menswear.
Around the middle of the 2000s, men’s wardrobes began to become shrink-wrapped thanks to Hedi Slimane’s influence at Dior Homme and later Saint Laurent. It was all skinny-fit things, muscle shirts, and lean tailoring for indie bands.
The enormous trend was partially a response to earlier styles, but it also coincided with the mainstreaming of athleisure and hip-hop fashion. The billowing suits worn by Kim Jones, Demna Gvasalia, Patrick Grant, and Virgil Abloh were one component, while Kanye West’s longline tees and clunky hoodies were another.
This is as comfortable as fashion in contrast to spray-on jeans and nip-and-tuck tailoring. blanket jackets, boxy tees, wide-leg pants, and floppy blazers. Although they can still be tailored, larger clothing is undoubtedly more sartorial.
But to assume it’s something fresh would be a mistake. Dad jeans are straight out of the 1990s, while wider slacks are relics of 1950s fashion, and power suits are deeply rooted in the 1980s.
Oversized has always been a statement, and right now, the fashion industry is making a lot of them.
How to Make the Oversized Clothing Trend Work: SUPERSIZE ME
KNOW THE OCCASION
The huge fashion may be popular right now, but stylist Sarah-Ann Murray, who has dressed actors like Samuel L. Jackson, Stanley Tucci, and Jonah Hill, believes it’s not appropriate for every occasion. “Evening wear, which is typically the most formal of events, doesn’t seem to work for me. But it doesn’t mean you can’t wear it for a more sophisticated appearance. Consider the Italian suits that resemble Armani and are frequently cut generously and softly.
“A deconstructed oversized suit, especially double-breasted, can definitely work as long as it fits on the shoulders, the arm and trouser length, and proportionally at the waist, and the rest of the proportions are correct so it is not too short in the jacket.”
BUY OVERSIZED CLOTHING, NOT BIG
Also, resist the urge to game the system. One of the must-have suede jackets for this season may still be available, but if it’s two sizes too big, don’t just pass it off as oversized—that only works when it was made specifically for that use.
“Purposefully oversized pieces provide the additional structure you need to avoid looking like all your clothes have stretched on the hanger which just looks scruffy,” advises Murray. “You want the clothing to be big around the shoulders and waist, where it belongs. If not, you’ll appear unprepared for your new school uniform, or worse, like Donald Trump dressed in a suit.
ADD BALANCE
As with every statement trend, it’s crucial to resist the urge to enter with the grace of a dump truck backing up without any tires. Initially dipping your toes in slowly can help this approach operate best, according to Murray.
“For the most part, you need a slimmer fit elsewhere to balance out the style. In order to have only one piece that offers movement and enormous lines, you might opt to wear an oversized coat over a more fitted sweater, tee, or shirt and thinner pants. The same is true for jeans or pants; strive to keep the top fitting normally; nevertheless, avoid going too slim because the contrast will look strange.
