When you come across the word shell, what pops into your mind? How about the term necklace?! Well, for me at first sight of the shell I quickly think of the coastline. The beautiful beach scenery that everyone enjoys, I believe. That term reminds me of the good times I normally have whenever I visit the coast. All the swimming, being buried in the sand and making castles. The necklace, on the other hand, reminds me of a certain gorgeous necklace I bought for my girlfriend way back while I was in high school. Though we, later on, broke up, she quite did appreciate the gift back then.
In this summer season of 2022, shell necklaces have quite been on the rise in the fashion industry. Moreover out here in Africa and on numerous islands across the Indian and Pacific oceans. Just as the name suggests, shell necklaces are made out of seashells. These shells are obtained from the sea bed by divers. You may as well come across a shell while swimming at the seashore; if lucky enough that is.
So why shell necklaces?
First of all, shells look cute. Very gorgeous artifacts. Secondly, they are more durable as compared to other materials and hence will last longer. With the durability levels high, they tend to save on costs that would have been used to purchase other necklaces after the wreckage. In addition, shell necklaces mark a sense of cultural heritage. More so for indigenous communities. It is an important symbol of something they proudly acknowledge under their traditions.
Where do you find one of these?
I would say, visit a cultural artifacts shop if you do want one of these. You can as well find them on beaches. Prices vary but what I totally know is that they are worth every penny guys. So, get one.
Yours, EDWIN WAMAE.
