Hola fashionistas, how’s the winter wind blowing? Research has shown that during winter, the temperature drops and the wind becomes harsh. These factors cause the moisture levels on the skin to reduce, thereby causing dryness and irritation. This is why we will be discussing 7 easy dry skin treatment tips to prepare us for this winter.
In Nigeria, Harmattan is the season of cold and dry harsh winds. I typically love the cold but when it comes to a dry throat as well as dry skin, I tend to do everything I can to prevent it. Which is what I think y’all should be doing. One thing I have noticed about the skin is that moisture is good and just as water prevents dehydration, moisture prevents dryness.
Koreans are like trademarks of smooth skin, maybe that’s why I love them so much. It’s like every natural way to keep your skin from breaking out that can be found in their convenience stores. Oh, what I’d give for Nigerian stores to sell these kinds of stuff at affordable prices. Alas, we don’t always get what we wish for. Fortunately, there are more natural and inexpensive ways to keep your skin dry and smooth during winter.
7 easy dry skin treatment tips to prepare you for winter breakout:
Avoid scented products.
I have sensitive skin. This means that my skin tends to be oily for some time and dry in the blink of an eye, especially during cold seasons. So, because of this, I tend to avoid overly scented soaps or products. I know what you may be thinking, I like soaps and products that make me smell good. That is not a bad thing, however, during winter or seasons when you know your skin is more likely susceptible to breakage, it is best to avoid such products. What works well for one person might not work for the other.
My mum uses carrot-scented shea butter cream and Septol black soap, which nourishes her skin. However, I don’t like it. Why? Because the scent of the cream is sharp and if I dare use it, I should most likely expect a dry throat or an inability to sleep. Weird, right? (I know, lol). Anyway, if you are trying to get in good graces with your skin this winter, then it is best to go for products that do not have overly scented chemicals.
Moisturizing is a must.
Moisturizing means making something, especially the skin, less dry. I cannot emphasize the importance of moisturizing. This is the art of revitalizing your skin to make it susceptible to any harsh breakout. There are a lot of moisturizers, that are affordable and also natural. I use Nivea nourishing cocoa lotion because it doesn’t have an over-the-top kind of scent but also works as a moisturizer. Moisturizers aren’t just lotions or creams but can also be soaps. For example, the Dove sensitive skin unscented beauty bar amongst others is one of the top picks for moisturizing soaps.
However, there are also a lot of natural moisturizers like;
1. Honey
is also a natural humectant, so it helps keep the skin moist but not oily. You can use it as a healing mask once a week by applying a thin layer on clean skin for about 10 minutes, before rinsing it off with warm water.
2. Aloe Vera Gel:
Contains humectants which when used as a moisturizer can help stimulate both collagen and elastin fibers, boosting the elasticity of your skin. You can choose to buy aloe vera-based products like the soap I use (Septol medicated soap with aloe vera) or directly use the gel from the plant. The aloe vera gel from the plant can be applied directly to the skin as long as it is mature.
One of the hostels I stayed in during my 3rd to 4th year at the university was a three-bedroom apartment. My landlord grew a lot of plants on his “farm”. Plants, which also included Aloe Vera. I would watch as he harvested it and applied it to his skin, and after some time, I started doing the same and I was pleased with the results.
3. Coconut oil
is rich in fatty acids that contain antibacterial properties, helping to smoothen and improve your skin texture and tone. It can be applied to the skin, face, and hair to keep it moisturized during the winter breakout.
4. Shea Butter
is another good natural moisturizer. Its thick consistency keeps the moisture locked in. So, when applied to the skin or hair, it helps to keep it smooth and hydrated. I always apply a mixture of coconut oil and shea butter to my hair to make it smooth and reduce itchiness.
5. Olive oil
is one of nature’s best moisturizers. It is rich in vitamin E, thereby making it more suitable as an anti-inflammatory oil-based product. My mum uses olive oil for her skin when she can’t find her scented cream in the market. It works a hundred percent. I also have a friend who uses it as a lotion, hair cream, and moisturizer (let’s just say, his skin looks amazing).
Time your cold showers and hot baths:
Who doesn’t like a hot bath? I know I do. Winter is the period when the temperature drops. So, it is necessary to understand the system of your body’s homeostasis (I loved that topic in biology). Due to the unwelcome dryness of the weather, cold showers seem like a no-go area and long hot baths feel more pleasing.
However, it is important to note that taking long cold showers or very hot baths can deprive your skin of the value and nourishment it needs. In short, take short cold baths and avoid long very hot baths. If necessary, do not exceed the 5-10 minute mark for baths, especially during winter.
Do not over-exfoliate:
Exfoliation involves the removal of dead skin cells through either scrubs or chemical-based exfoliants. I know that many of us, including me, love exfoliating. However, too much of it is BAD. Sensitive skin, dry skin, and harsh winter do not go well together with exfoliating every chance you get. Cut back on exfoliating exercise for the winter season by choosing to use softer chemical-based exfoliants instead of scrubs. In cases of already broken skin, do not, I repeat, do not exfoliate or else, you’d damage the skin more. Instead, moisturize.
Drink lots of water:
Water is the closest thing we get to natural cleansing. During winter, it isn’t just the skin that breaks but we tend to get scratchy throats and all. However, drinking water, preferably lukewarm or warm, is one of the best decisions you can ever make. It doesn’t just keep you balanced on the inside, but also helps to nourish your skin from the inside out. Dehydration shows on the skin and when joined with the winter or cold season, you end up with a chapped lip and a bag under your eyes.
Watch your diet:
Besides water, what we take into our bodies as food, is also very important as it could affect the skin on the outside. Research has shown that meals rich in antioxidants like broccoli, spinach, carrots, potatoes, cabbage, asparagus, avocados, beetroot, radish, lettuce, sweet potatoes, and kale, aid skin improvement.
You can also add meals high in omega-fatty acid. Now, I am not just saying this for the ladies but also for the guys. I admire guys who eat well and look good, it’s like basic training for healthy living. It isn’t just women who should watch what they eat, but everyone else, if we want to keep ourselves healthy. I mean, who doesn’t want to live long? And winter, guys, is one of the times to watch what we eat.
Get enough sleep and use humidifiers:
I love sleeping. Getting enough sleep cannot be overrated because whether as a guy or a lady, you need your beauty sleep. It is also advisable to use humidifiers as they help to increase moisture in the air, especially in the winter season.
All these seven tips are ways to keep your skin from looking like a rag doll during cold seasons. So, remember that line in Frozen, when Elsa decides to unintentionally freeze the land? “The cold doesn’t bother me, anyway” (lol, yes, that one). It can be true if you intentionally stick to the tips and let’s be sure to greet ourselves after the winter with a beautiful and radiating skin glow.
Some extra tips include watching what you wear and applying sunscreen even though you don’t feel like it.
